Tanjungpinang's City history

The beginning of Tanjungpinang came to be visible in the eighteenth century or on the time since the beginning oh the founding of Riau Lingga Kongdom. Tanjungpinang gradually changed becomes a settlement area and precisely a busy port of trade, this was because of the island was included in one of the trade gateway in Sumatera.

The existence of Tanjungpinang cannot be separated from the history of Penyengat Island, a central goverment which became the symbol of Malay grandeur in the eigthteenth century. In the island of 3,5 square kilometers, you will findthere cultural sites such as architectural buildings, funeral and architectures of inheritance of the Kings of Riau Lingga Kingdom. Formerly, Tanjungpinang had a good potition and a good weather condition was deemed as an ideal plase for shippng fleets to protect themselves from the strom attack, or for the temporarily anchoring while to collect water and provisions.

Since 1784, Tanjungpinang was intensely growing as a settlement area and the became a city also functioned as a port of trade.

By the fast growing, Tanjungpinang at the post-independence, this city is continuosly growing and goverment was stipulated as the capital of Riau Province before it was moved to Pekanbaru. After thar, Tanjungpinang was stipulated as the capital of Riau Islands Regency comprises 17 Sub-districts.

In 1983, Tanjungpinang got the formal legality as an Administrative City (Kotif) led an Administrative Mayor. In 2001 its status was level as a Municipality. Then by founding Riau Islands Province (Kepri) based on Act No.25 year 2002, Tanjungpinang was stipulated as the capital of Riau Island Province.
